Belgium COVID-19 initiative renews collaboration for molecular testing

Thomas Beuls | Press Release | 4/08/2020

Brussels, Belgium | August 3, 2020 | The Belgian government and UgenTec have agreed to extend their existing agreement to automate COVID PCR analysis for high-throughput laboratories. Multiple sites that are part of the national COVID testing hub, including the University of Liege and Biogazelle, were selected as molecular ‘overflow’ testing sites.

UgenTec and the Belgian government today announced the extension of their collaboration on currently ongoing PCR data analysis automation projects for high-throughput SARS-CoV-2 laboratories. The sites of the University of Liege & Biogazelle have automated the data analysis of PCR results using UgenTec’s FastFinder Analysis solution.

In an effort to ramp up daily testing the Belgian government has set up a number of ultra-high throughput laboratory hubs. The laboratory sites of the University of Liege and Biogazelle all offer clinical-grade lab space as well as the required personnel and technical expertise to perform large numbers of PCR tests.

UgenTec’s FastFinder platform is a workflow and data analysis suite designed to support molecular laboratories’ scalability, standardization, traceability and compliance efforts. FastFinder software automates PCR data analysis, result and quality reporting.

With volumes running as high as thousands of samples per day, we need reliable software to guarantee test turnaround time and monitor quality and performance” said Dr. Jo Vandesompele, at Biogazelle. “FastFinder takes away the pain of manual data review and ensures we have insights into essential metrics such as positive rates, assay performance, continuous test proficiency and QC tracking.”

During Belgium’s COVID-19 peak, we recorded up to 20.000 samples being processed with FastFinder in a single day.” said Steven Verhoeven, CEO at UgenTec. “With continued resurgence and localized outbreaks, high-volume testing will be with us for the foreseeable future. We’re proud to support these large scale laboratories and national initiatives with advanced data analysis and lab intelligence solutions to ensure the testing is highly robust and provides reliable answers in the context of massive sample throughput.”
